Dubai is one of the most well known emirates in the UAE. Millions of people visit the city every year, and it boasts one of the largest expatriate populations in the world. It is important to be aware however, that the local laws and customs in Dubai are likely to be different from those in the west. We have provided some advice to help ensure that your stay in this emirate is a pleasant one.

The UAE and Dubai are predominantly Islamic. It therefore follows that Islamic laws and customs should be followed. Clothing can be as casual as in many other countries; however you should be aware that clothing should be modest and that revealing or tight fitting clothing should be avoided.
Dubai, as well as many other Middle Eastern nations, has the official day of rest on Friday. Many businesses will let their workers take Thursday and Friday off work, with normal operations resuming on Saturday. A normal business day in Dubai will start at 8 am and finish at 8 pm.
During the holy month of Ramadan, it is not allowed to eat, drink, or smoke outdoors during the day. All restaurants will be closed during the daylight hours. After dark however, it is permitted to eat outside.
When shaking hands or eating with people of the Islamic faith it is important not to use your left hand. In the Muslim culture people use their left hands for cleaning and doing unclean work, always use your right hand for introductions and meals. It is also vitally important that you do not point the soles of your feet at anyone as this is considered highly offensive.
Do not take pictures of Islamic women. When being introduced to women in Dubai do not shake their hand unless they have offered their hand first. When meeting Arabic men it is a social faux pas to ask about their wife and implies an interest other than social.
Islamic faith requires 5 daily prayers. Do not disturb these showings of faith. In shopping malls and office complexes there will be Abulution rooms. Do not use these rooms as toilets.
