UAE Travel Tips
When traveling in the UAE here are some things that you should keep in mind:
- Terrorism is still a threat for the entire Middle East region. Be alert for announcements and review your travel arrangements before you leave. Be alert and maintain contact with your government representatives.
- Most visits to the UAE are relatively trouble free. The majority of crimes against visitors are contained to petty theft. However you should always be vigilant and maintain a close watch on your belongings.
- The UAE is a Muslim country and as such the local laws and customs are based around the Islamic faith. Women are typically expected to dress modestly with clothes that will completely cover their arms and legs. Drinking alcohol outside of a licensed establishment is a crime, as is public drunkenness.
- It is illegal to import pornography, pork products and narcotics. Some printed materials may be scrutinized and/or confiscated. Contact a representative of the UAE before you travel to make sure that you are not bringing any illegal items into the country.
- The possession or movement of drugs is illegal. If convicted of a drug related offence you may be subjected to a minimum of 4 years in prison. If you are tested for narcotics via a urine sample or other methods, and there are drugs in your system, you are also liable for a prison sentence.
- Citizens of many nationalities do not need a visa to stay in the UAE for up to 60 days. If you are planning to stay in the UAE for more than 60 days you will need to obtain a visa before your arrival. - Healthcare facilities in the UAE are of a high standard. However, you should be aware of a new law that requires all non residents to obtain health insurance. Visitors to the country are required to pay for the costs of their medical treatment before leaving.
