Out-patient Coverage

Out-patient insurance covers treatment provided by a medical practitioner or specialist and does not require an overnight stay at the hospital. Most medical insurance plans bought by expats include inpatient and outpatient coverage. Typical benefits that would be included in an outpatient plan include:

  • Consultations with general practitioners and Specialists
  • Prescribed medicines
  • Diagnostic tests
  • Vaccinations
  • Routine health checks
  • Alternative treatments i.e. Acupuncture or Chiropractor
  • Home Nursing

The premium for outpatient treatment is likely to be the same as for the 'core' inpatient treatment, typically, adding this option to an inpatient plan is likely to double the cost of the insurance. Outpatient treatment is generally characterized by 'little and often'. This means that outpatient claims are very much smaller that inpatient claims but they happen much more frequently. Some expats prefer not to insure for outpatient treatment since they are not concerned about the smaller risks, only more serious accidents and illnesses. The majority however, particularly those with families, buy inpatient and outpatient plans.

Most Outpatient plans will usually have an Overall Maximum Benefit for all treatment or consultations. It is important to know what limits are attached to your outpatient plan to ensure that you have the coverage that you require. Outpatient treatments are still subjected to general exclusions that vary slightly based on the individual insurance provider.
