Saudi Arabia Travel Tips

Saudi Arabia, while a unique and wonderful country, has different laws and customs to those in Europe or the USA. On arrival some of these social mores are unknown to many expatriates. In order to help you better get to know and understand Saudi Arabia we have provided some basic travel tips, of which everyone should be aware before visiting the country.

• As a Muslim county, Islamic law is strictly enforced in Saudi Arabia. The public practice of any religion other than Islam is strictly prohibited. Adultery and Homosexual behavior are illegal and can carry the death sentence. Women are prohibited from driving any type vehicle. Everyone must conform to Islamic codes of etiquette (such as clothing and behavior).
  
  
• Alcohol is illegal in Saudi Arabia. Possessing, serving, or trading alcoholic beverages can result in severe penalties. Pork products and pornography are also illegal in Saudi Arabia.
  
  
• Drugs are illegal in Saudi Arabia. The possession of narcotics can carry the death penalty. If you are arriving in the country with medication you should also have a doctor’s note confirming that you have been prescribed the drugs, otherwise they may be confiscated and there may be legal repercussions.
  
  
• Visitors of any nationality will require a visa to enter Saudi Arabia, even those who have traveled to the country to perform the Hajj. You should enquire about visas at the nearest representative of the Saudi government before you travel. It is important to note that on occasion individuals who have traveled to Israel, or whose passports contain an Israeli immigration stamp have been denied entry into Saudi Arabia. Please update yourself on the current border crossing situation before you travel.
  
  
• Women who are traveling alone are required to have a male meet them at the airport. Women who are not met by men on arrival have experienced delays when entering the country or catching a continuing flight.
  
  
• Non Saudi women who are married to Saudi nationals will require their husband’s permission before they are allowed to leave the country. This also pertains to their children.
  
  
• Saudi Arabia is a very hot and dry country. When visiting Saudi Arabia it is important that you remember to drink plenty of water and wear clothing that will protect your skin from the sun. Dehydration and sun burn can develop into serious medical conditions and you should take steps to protect yourself
