- Singapore has the death penalty as a mandatory sentence for certain crimes. Murder and drug offences will be punished with execution. Caning is the mandatory punishment for a number of other offences that are classified as “outrage of modesty” crimes.
- Most visitors to Singapore have pleasant trips. If there are any incidents they will be, for the most part, limited to cases of petty theft. If you experience any issues during your stay in the city it is advisable to contact your embassy or consulate as soon as possible to receive help. Take care of your belongings and exercise caution when in crowded areas.
- Smoking in any public place (bars, restaurants, and parks) is banned. Chewing gum on MRT trains is also strictly prohibited. Both of these offences carry on the spot fines. If you are unsure as to whether you can smoke do not light up and ask the staff where you can go.
- Singapore has an extremely high standard of healthcare. It is important to be aware however, that not all over the counter medications are readily available and that some of these medicines will require a prescription. If you are visiting the city for a short time, take a much medicine as you may need for the length of your trip, you may also need a doctors note.
- There is a risk of high seasonal pollution. Singapore is periodically affected by forest fires in Indonesia. These fires can cause haze and be a severe health risk. If there is an incident involving forest fires, follow all government directions and remain indoors.
